ABSTRACT

Our aim in this study was to evaluate the Sono-morphologic and color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) findings of patients with thyroid nodules and also to detect the role of these properties in differantiation between malignant and benign thyroid nodules with findings of ultrasonography guided fine needle aspiration biopsies.

Material and Methods:

Our study included 205 ultrasonography guided thyroid nodule biopsies in 200 patients. The cytological results were classified as benign, suspicious for malignancy and inadequate material.Sono-morphologic and Color Doppler Ultrasound properties of thyroid nodules were retrospectively evaluated by the evaluation of the patient records according to their ages and gender.

Results:

Cytological results were reported as 136 (66.3%) benign nodules, 42 (20.4%) malignant suspicious nodules, 27 (13%) inadequate materials. Malignant thyroid nodules had microcalcifications, hipervascular and irregular border which were statistically significant. However there was no statistically significant difference found in age, gender, and the other sonographic features of nodules (p>0.05).

Conclusion:

The presence of irregular border, microcalcifications, hypervascularity of the thyroid nodules, significantly increases the likelihood of malignancy. However, Fine needle aspiration biopsy is needed to obtain accurate diagnosis of the thyroid nodules.
