ABSTRACT

Objective:

Cerebral Palsy is the most frequently encountered motor disability of childhood. It is seen as a result of various factors affecting developing central nervous system and distrupting its development. The factor that affects most the life quality of patietns with cerebral palsy and complicates the patient care and treatment, is bone fractures that occurs spontaneously or as a result of minor trauma. Prevalance of bone fractures in cerebral palsy is between 5-60 % and the main reason is reduced bone mineral density.

Material and Methods:

In this study the patients with cerebral palsy in Pediatric Neurology Clinic of Şişli Etfal Hamidiye Training and Research Hospital are enrolled and our aim was to assess the relation between BMD and mobility of children by investigating the BMD measurements retrospectively.

Results:

Our results strongly support the relation between mobility and low BMD measurements that increases the risk of fracture in patients with cerebral palsy.

Conclusion:

In our opinion, the mobility of patients with cerebral palsy should be encouraged.
