ABSTRACT

Objective:

Helicobacter pylori (HP) is a gram-negative bacterium. As well as functional dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease and some various related diseases, it may cause gastric adenocarcinoma and MALT (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue) lymphoma. In recent years there are some studies investigating the relationship between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) HP. In this study we investigated the relationship between IDA and HP.

Material and Methods:

Totally 121 patients were enrolled in the study, 64 being patient group were performed upper endoscopy with the diagnosis of IDA in internal medicine outpatient clinic and 57 being control group were performed upper endoscopy for reasons out of IDA. The control group was selected randomly among patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal system endoscopy and don’t have anemia. The patients’ blood counts, endoscopic findings and HP positivity was examined. HP positivity rates were compared in these two groups of patients.

Results:

HP positivity rate was found in patients. 41 (64 %) patients were HP positive, while 23 (36 %) were negative in anemic group. 30 (52 %) patients were HP positive and 27 (% 48) were negative (Table 1) (p<0,05) in the other group.

Conclusion:

HP positivity was higher in IDA group than the other group.
