ABSTRACT

Objective:

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the medial open wedge osteotomy technique, indications for varus gonarthrosis and compare the results with literature.

Material and Methods:

For this purpose, 33 knee of 27 patients who has been admitted to our clinic between years 2001 and 2004 with knee pain, were evaluated. Three men and 24 women patients are evaluated for this study. Patients mean age was 59.54 years, mean body mass index was 30.58.

Results:

The mean follow-up period was 6.7 years. Preoperatively mean Lysholm score was 52.6. Preoperatively the angle between the mechanical axis of femur and tibia is 8.30 degrees at varus. The average follow-up lysholm scores at year 2009 was 70.2 and the mean angle between femur and tibia femoral mechanical axis was 1.78 degrees at varus. Improvement at the lysholm score and the angle between mechanical axis of femur and tibia between preoperative and final evaluations was found to be significant statistically (p<0.01). No significant statistically relation was found between the body mass index and lysholm score and the angle between mechanical axis of femur and tibia (p>0.05).

Conclusion:

As a result, for the appropriate patients who has medial osteocompartmental arthrosis, the high tibial osteotomy with Puddu plate application is an easy procedure that aim to reduce symptoms and the progression of pathology.
