ABSTRACT

Hemorrhagic disease of newborn occurs in vitamin K deficiency. The condition is grouped into three categories; early onset, classic disease and late onset. In case of deficiencies in vitamin K dependent factors, patients may suffer from bleeding that tends to be nasal, umblical, urogenital, gastrointestinal and intracranial hemorrhage which causes serious morbidity and mortalitiy. Intramuscular 1 mg vitamin K prophylaxies which is administered in newborn period protects early onset and classic hemorrhagic disease but is not sufficient in preventing the late onset disease and to emphasize this fact, we present here two infants who had late onset intracranial hemorrhage even though they had single dose vitamin K prophylaxis at birth.
