ABSTRACT

Objective:

To determine the frequency and levels of anxiety and depression in pregnant women with hyperemesis gravidarum using the Beck Depression Inventory and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.

Material and Methods:

Fifty <20 weeks pregnant women with hyperemesis gravidarum receiving inpatient treatment in Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital created the study group. The control group was composed of fifty healthy <20 weeks pregnant women without any medical or obstetrical problems. These patients’ anxiety and depression levels were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. They were also compared in terms of sodium, potassium, beta-hCG levels, age, parity, and body mass index.

Results:

Anxiety and depression frequency was significantly high among patients hospitalized for hyperemesis gravidarum. Anxiety and depression levels were also significantly high in these hyperemesis gravidarum patients. In terms of sodium and potassium levels, statistically significant differences were found between the two groups (p=0.006<0.05 and p=0.032<0.05, consecutively). As compared for age, gravida, parity, and body mass index; no statistically significant differences were found between the two groups.

Conclusion:

Anxiety and depression levels in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum were significantly high in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum as well as anxiety and depression frequency in this group.
