ABSTRACT

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate parity’s impact on the maternal and perinatal outcomes in very advanced maternal age.

16.294 patients’ charts who gave birth between January 2015 and January 2016 in İstanbul Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Research Hospital were retrospectively evaluated according to age. Pregnancies greater than 24 weeks of gestation were included. Women ≥40 years old at the time of delivery were divided into nulliparous and multiparous subgroups. Maternal and perinatal outcomes are compared between the subgroups according to the parity.

Nulliparous women ≥40 years old at the time of delivery have more maternal complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, postpartum hemorrhage, and perinatal complications such as preterm delivery, premature rupture of membranes, inutero growth retardation, placenta previa, ablatio placenta and increased cesarean section rates than multiparous women ≥40 years old.

Pregnancies of maternal age ≥40 years are associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes and these risks are more evident in nulliparous subgroup.
