Objective:
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship of intrauterine device usage and the duration of intrauterine device usage with the formation of tubo-ovarian abscess.
Material and Methods:
The reports of patients who were treated in our clinic with the diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease, between january 2006 and december 2010, were analyzed. 60 patients who were treated medically and 58 patients who were operated on for a tubo-ovarian abscess were compared in terms of intrauterine device usage, duration of usage and laboratory and clinical findings.
Results:
In the group of patients who were treated medically with diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease, 9 patients were using intrauterin device; and in the group of patients operated for tubo-ovarian abscess, 30 patients were intrauterin device users. The duration of the intrauterine device usage was approximately 7.3 years in the group treated medically and 8.04 years in the group operated.
Conclusion:
There is a significant statistical difference between TOA and medical therapy group on this study.
