The Risk Factors in the Development of Gastrointestinal Complications in Coronary Artery Surgery

Objective:

Gastrointestinal complications in coronary artery surgery are rare but highly mortal. Preoperative factors, co-morbidities and the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass result in various pathologies concerning gastrointestinal system complications. In this retrospective study we aimed to determine the risk factors for gastrointestinal system complications by evaluating preoperative factors, perioperative and postoperative clinical data of patients who underwent coronary artery surgery.

Material and Methods:

Preoperative factors, perioperative and postoperative clinical data of 1212 consecutive patients who underwent coronary artery surgery in Dr. Siyami Ersek Hospital between January 2012 and July 2013 were studied with the approval of the hospital’s education and scientific board.

Results:

The group with gastrointestinal system complications was older, had chronic renal and cardiac failure. Postoperative acute renal failure was found to be the most significant risk factor. (OR: 6.1, % 95 CI 3.6-8.7). Peripheral artery disease was an especially significant risk factor in patients who developed mesenteric ischemia (OR: 3.9, % 95 CI 2.6-6.9).

Conclusion:

Mortality and morbidity can be reduced in patients under risk for all gastrointestinal system complications, especially mesenteric ischemia, with close monitoring, early diagnosis and treatment.
