Objective:

Aim of this study was to determine lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) prevalence in Kahramanmaras region by performing large-scale screening. It is a retrospective cohort study.

Material and Methods:

4117 abdominal radiographies on which articulation of last rib with vertebrae, sacral wings and transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae are clearly seen were retrospectively evaluated. 121 radiographies on which exact evaluation could not have been made and patients who had previously undergone lumbosacral surgery were excluded from the study and 3996 radiographies were included. Castellvi classification were used for definition of transitional vertebrae.

Results:

LSVT prevalence were determined as 12.9%. Sacralization and lumbarization prevalence were 9.1% and 3.8% respectively.

Conclusion:

LSTV is a common congenital anomaly. Our study determined prevalence of this congenital anomaly. All clinicians should be aware of this common anomaly to decrease complication risk in spine surgery. Our study performed in our area’s population will help increase this awareness.
