Overview of Kidney Disorders Due to Substance Use

Recent evidence suggests more than 40 % of young people have tried recreational drug use. Substance abuse has been increasing in our country. Rapidly increasing drug abuse is clearly a major public health problem. There are numerous results of the use of recreational drugs so the physician should always consider substance abuse in any unexplained illness. Renal complications of substance use has become an increasingly common situation . Substance use may cause glomerular, interstitial and vascular disease. Although some agents have direct nephrotoxic effect, many other mechanisms may also be involved in the event. The renal complications are often chronic and irreversible. We review the commonly used substances of and their associations with renal disease.
