Our Clinical Approach to Lip Cancer; Surgery and Reconstruction Principles

Objective:

Lip cancers, the most common cancer of the oral cavity, constitute 25-30% of oral cavity cancers are the second most common cancer in the head and neck area after cutaneous cancers. The purpose of this work is to evaluate lip surgery procedures in our cancer patients, functional and cosmetic results, treatment success and difficulties we may encounter and to discussions with current and relevant literature.

Material and Methods:

A retrospective clinical study.

Results:

20 patients were included in the study. 7 patients were at stage 1 (T1N0M0), 6 patients were at stage 2 (T2N0M0) and 7 patients were at stage 3 (1 patient; T1N1M0, 6 patients, T2N1M0), respectively. All the patients underwent primary surgery in addition to neck dissection.

Conclusion:

Prophylactic neck dissection is performed in all patients without lymph node metastasis. 5-year diseasefree survival rate was 100% in patients with T1 tumor. The skin defects were reconstructed with appropriate regional flaps. Cosmetic and functionally successful results were obtained.
