With the increase in the prevalence of diabetes in women of reproductive age, the proportion of pregnancies complicated by preexisting diabetes is also increased. Gestational diabetes mellitus is a condition in women who have carbonhydrate intolerance with onset or recognition during pregnancy. It is one of the most common medical complication of pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes mellitus are at higher risk for gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and cesarean delivery and its associated potential morbidities. Neonatal medical complications associated with gestational diabetes include neonatal hypoglycemia, hyperbillirubinemia, policythemia, hypocalcemia and respiratory distress. All pregnant patients should be screened for gestational diabetes mellitus at 24-28 weeks of gestation.
