Diabetes mellitus, being a systemic cronic metabolic disease with its microangiopathic character, can cause several pathologies in various eye tissues. It can change corneal surface and lacrimal system, it can lead to refractive changes of the cristalline lens or eventully to cataract progression and it can cause severe visual loss secondary to maculopathy or retinopathy in retinal tissue. If diabetic patients can be followed up by an ophthalmologist in proper intervals, visual loss can be prevented using diagnostic and therapeutic tools in a prophylactic fashion.
