Bariatric surgery can be grouped in two categories. These are restrictive procedures that reduce caloric intake by limiting gastric reservoir and the malabsorptive procedures that reduce the length of small intestine. Preparation of obese patients to surgery should be made by taking into account potential risks of obesity and the presence of comorbid disease. For a successful surgical approach and results; preanaesthetic evaluation, the selection of ideal anesthetic agent, the ventilation strategy and appropriate postoperative analgesia are extremely important.
